The Department of Geography was founded with the start of the study at Girls’ College of Education in Jeddah in the academic year1394-1395 AH. 3428 BA students graduated from the Geography Department by the end of the year 1428 AH. Therefore, the department is considered one of the early literary departments in the college. In the academic year 1398-1399 AH, a program of Geography Diploma was started with only four students enrolling.
In 1400 AH, a master program was offered to Saudi demonstrators majoring in Natural Geography and Human Geography. In 1406 AH, a doctoral program for lecturers was opened to prepare academics and Saudi staff members who were supposed to teach specialized courses in the department and assist by teaching in some other departments, because teaching at that time was done by staff members from other Arab countries.
The post-graduate programs for master and doctoral degrees depended on qualified professors with various specializations- both contracting teachers or those from other universities such as Umm Al-Qura University, King Sa'ud University, Imam Muhammad Ibn Sa'ud University and others- who either taught courses or supervised and discussed dissertations.
.In 1429 AH, a committee was allocated for higher studies. It consisted of staff members and a member from King Abdul-Aziz University to develop the post-graduate program of the department and propose suggestions for such development.
